Gwilym Roberts was born in Llandynan, Llantysilio in 1895, living in his early years with his mother Hannah in her parents' house. Hannah was a cleaner and later moved into a house with her sister Annie and Gwilym. Gwilym was a shop assistant in a drapers shop before he joined the army.
