John David Ellis was born in Llangollen June Quarter1907, son of Thomas Ellis, a postman of Rose Place, Berwyn Street, and Kate Ellis (nee Roberts). He had served in the Merchant Marine, but transferred to submarines about 1940. He married to Mona Clitheroe in Barrow-in-Furness in September Quarter 1930, and they had a daughter Mona Ellis, born June Quarter 1931, and a son Austin J Ellis born September Quarter 1934. The family home was in Barrow-in-Furness. His last visit to his mother, at 50 Berwyn Street, was in February 1940
