George
Idris Evans was born in June Quarter 1924, son of David Evans and Mary Catherine
Evans (nee Williams). He was a member of the Parish Church, and football player.
He had worked for Coward’s Timber, and had been the youngest member of the
L.D.V., forerunner of the Home Guard. He joined the Navy about 1942
and became Able Seaman, No: P/JX 364293. On
completion of training was posted to H.M.S. Penelope (also known as H.M.S.
Pepper Pot from having been holed so often), on which ship he served for 18
months. H.M.S. Penelope was leaving Naples on 18th February 1944 to
return to Anzio area when she was torpedoed at by the German submarine U-410. A
torpedo struck her in the after engine room and was followed sixteen minutes
later by another torpedo that hit in the after boiler room, causing her
immediate sinking. 415 of the crew, including the captain, went down with the
ship.
