Ernest Hughes was born in 1913, the son of Hugh Hughes, a timber feller, of 4 Old Chapel Square, Llangollen, and Catherine Jane Hughes (nee Jones). He had been a music lover, and for many years a member of the Llangollen Town Band, and when he joined up he was in his unit’s band.
