Pen yr Erw (Top of the Acre) was another property that used to belong to the Williams Wynn family. There is no mention of the property before 1844. At this time the cottage was known as Bryn y Ffynnon (Hill of the Well) and was lived in by Edward Lloyd, an agricultural labourer and rockman, and his family. 30 years later the cottage, now called Pen Rhiw (Top of the Hill) was occupied by an 82 year old labourer, Thomas Hughes, his wife and 3 children.
Local folklore had it that the lady that moved in after Thomas Hughes was a witch. People said, when their butter refused to congeal, that she had ‘turned their butter’.
