The White Stag of Llangar

The tradition is that Llangar Church was to have been built near the spot where the Cynwyd Bridge crosses the Dee.

Unseen forces, however, were thought to be at work to prevent the construction of the Church. Masons and labourers worked through the day to lay the stones which were, mysteriously removed overnight.

The men decided to seek the advice of a local wise man. He told them ’God is unwilling for you to build your church here, you must hunt for the white stag (Carw Gwyn) and wherever you first see the stag you must build the church.
T
hey went away and took the wise man’s advice. The stag was startled in a thicket where the church of Llangar now stands. And (as the tradition is) the boundaries of the parish were settled by the course covered by the poor stag when he was forced to run for his life. He at last fell and the place where he was killed is to this day called Moel y Lladdfa or the Hill of Slaughter.
